Facelift Overview
The facelift has become one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures because as medical advances and new technologies increase life span, many woman and men find that they look older than they feel physically and mentally.  The duration of improvement cannot always be accurately predicted since it depends on the degree of wrinkling and sagging present; if sagging is excessive, the results may be dramatic; if sagging is premature and the operation is being performed to keep the patient looking young, the improvement may be more subtle. If you are tired of looking in the mirror and seeing loose skin and muscle, sagging cheeks and jowls, a scowling expression because the corners of your lips are downturned, or a loose neck, you will benefit from a facelift.

With something as valuable as your face, your best decision is to place yourself in the hands of a dedicated and experienced facial plastic surgeon such as Dr. Moelleken.  He is internationally recognized for his outstanding accomplishments and after performing thousands of facial rejuvenation procedures; his specialty is correcting the aging or disfigured face.  Like most cosmetic surgeons, Dr. Moelleken takes tremendous pride in his work and he is committed to delivering exceptional results. Facelift Facts
No matter how well you take care of your skin, wrinkling is a natural part of aging.  Your face is the most prominent image you display to the world.  It is also your most visible personal asset and the focal point for all of your interactions: especially first impressions.  Everyone perceives beauty differently but we all appreciate an attractive face.  It is not the actual beauty of your face however that is attractive but the confidence you emanate when you look your best.  In time, gravity, sun exposure, environmental factors, and the stresses of everyday life take their toll on your appearance and this can cause a serious detriment to your self-esteem and confidence.  As we age, most of us look in the mirror and see a face that does not represent the youthfulness we still feel on the inside.  Although nothing can stop the aging process, fortunately Dr. Brent Moelleken, M.D., F.A.C.S., can help reverse the ravages of time through a cosmetic surgery known as rhytidectomy, or a facelift.

Your skin goes through many changes, as you get older.  Cells divide more slowly and your dermis, or lower layer of skin, gets thinner.  Your dermis is comprised of several different types of tissue, including elastin and collagen.  Elastin gives your skin its elasticity and collagen keeps your skin taut. Eventually both of these proteins break down, causing your skin to loosen. The loss of elasticity makes your skin and underlying tissue more susceptible to the effects of gravity so instead of springing back when pulled, your skin sags. Additionally, the muscle and tissue composition under your skin changes, which leads to wrinkles.

A facelift is a procedure to tighten your skin and readjust the deep tissues of your face but beyond that, every facelift is different.  In Dr. Moelleken’s opinion, the skill and training of the surgeon performing your facelift is the most important aspect to consider when deciding to undergo this procedure. He advises that you seek a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or a Facial Plastic Surgeon to perform your surgery.  He explains that no other specialties are trained in the anatomy of all the deep layers of your face and that facelifts require a thorough knowledge of the nerves in your face to avoid damaging them.  Plastic surgeons are trained in microsurgery meaning they actually operate on nerves when they are cut, damaged, or missing thus; they are very familiar with where the nerves are located.  He warns that many doctors are board certified but he encourages you to find out exactly what specialty they are board certified in.  He warns that cosmetic surgery is a basket term for anyone who wants to consider themselves a “plastic surgeon” and he says takes the time to make sure they are board certified in plastic surgery of facial plastic surgery.

There is no treatment that even compares to achieving what a facelift with ancillary procedures can accomplish.  The many extra procedures that compliment the facelift such as brow elevation, eyelid surgery, cheek lifts, blepharoplasties, laser resurfacing, lip lifts, chin implants, neck tightening, witch’s chin repair, earlobe reduction, grafting to hollow areas and lips, minimally invasive brow lifts, and LiveFill, etc., are different for every patient. They are as important as your facelift itself because they enable Dr. Moelleken to rejuvenate your entire face harmoniously rather than just your “face brow and eyes” of the past.  Dr. Moelleken takes an artistic approach when he performs a facelift, which differs from previous procedures when the “pulled, plastic look” was common.

The results of a skillfully performed facelift are dramatic as well as long lasting.  Dr. Brent Moelleken is a Plastic and Reconstructive Cosmetic surgeon with offices in Beverly Hills and Santa Barbara.
