Arm Lift

Loose Arm Skin

Cosmetic surgery associated with loose upper arm skin is called brachioplasty. Loose upper arm skin often follows weight loss. After losing weight, skin may fail to tighten, therefore sagging. Brachioplasty can improve this problem. Brachioplasty can be performed through an incision along the arm, or in the armpit in some cases.

Liposuction alone is not used to correct loose skin, even with laser devices. This method is only a better choice if there's extra fat but the skin is tight. Usually, both liposculpture and brachioplasty are used at the same setting.

The greatest drawback of brachioplasy is the incision and possible scaring. A brachioplasty incision extends from the elbow up to the armpit. For patients that have excessive loose skin, this may be a worthy exchange. For minor sagging, it may not be worth it.

Brachioplasty is often combined with other procedures such as breast and axillary lifts, especially in patients who have lost a great deal of weight and have loose skin.

The Anesthesia

Brachioplasty is typically performed under a "light" general anesthetic (patient is asleep), but can be performed under IV sedation. This technique provides an excellent operating condition, while giving patient comfort and safety. Our anesthesiologist is Board Certified and remains in attendance during the operation. Prior to surgery, patients have the ability to consult with the anesthesiologist so any questions can be answered and an explanation of the procedure can be discussed. All precautionary measures are taken during the operation; monitoring and emergency equipment are present at all times.

Pre-Operative Preparations

It is extremely important that prior to undergoing any elective cosmetic surgery, patients be in good health. We require you undergo a physical examination and routine lab work, which are usually performed by your own primary physician. If you do not have a primary physician, we can refer you to one in your area; we do not provide these services. All pre-op paperwork must be in our office 1-2 weeks prior to surgery. This will allow time to correct minor abnormalities prior to the procedure.

Our office must be aware of any pre-existing medical conditions, medical history and of any medications you may be taking.

You must NOT smoke 2 weeks prior or 2 weeks after surgery. This will greatly impede your healing process and is associated with complications after surgery.

It is a required that someone drive you home upon discharge and that you arrange for transportation to and from our office for your post-operative appointments. Dr. Moelleken will grant you permission to drive once he feels you are well enough.

DO NOT take aspirin or aspirin-containing products for 2 weeks prior or 1 week after surgery unless instructed otherwise.

A diet with vitamin supplements, especially Vitamin C, is recommended. We encourage a diet high in protein and vegetables, with minimal fats and carbohydrates. You should be in the best nutritional state possible.

It is important that prior to undergoing liposuction patients be capable of maintaining a stable weight with the aid of diets and exercise. Stable weight, without artificial or temporary highs and lows, is best.

You should be well hydrated prior to the procedure.

Surgery and Recovery

Surgery can take between 1 to 2 hours. You may feel discomfort for the first 2 to 5 days, with continuous improvement for the following 14 days. Bruising is rare and in most patients, low activity can be resumed in 3 to 7 days. Although you may begin exercising more actively 2 weeks after surgery, you should consult with Dr. Moelleken.

Approximately 6 months after surgery the scars would have matured and final results can be expected.
