Inner Lift

Although an inner thigh lift can be more complex, it is sometimes the best option to achieve optimal results. Inner and outer thigh lifts can also provide the final enhancement for a patient who has already had a tummy tuck or who has extra skin, dimpling, or reduced elasticity in their thighs.

Outer Thigh Lift

In an outer thigh lift, Dr. Brent will concentrate on your buttocks and the “saddlebags” areas, tightening the areas and removing excess skin. This procedure typically has the most dramatic effects, with patients seeing drastic improvements.

Thigh Lift Procedure Overview

A thigh lift, also known as a thighplasty, is a surgical procedure that raises, firms, and tightens your thighs in proportion to your buttocks, abdomen, and legs. During the surgery, excess skin is removed, and the surrounding tissue is repositioned and reshaped to create a more pleasing contour.

From the back view, a distinctly defined fold separates your thighs and buttocks. From the front view, your thighs are smooth, highlighting the muscles, while your inner thighs are firm and flat. A thigh lift can address either the front, the back, or both, depending on your goals. If you are self-conscious about your lower body appearance, a thigh lift can dramatically improve your thigh area and enhance the overall appearance of your figure. If you have experienced a loss of skin elasticity in your thigh, hip, or buttock areas, it will produce an attractive thigh and buttock area with improved contours. It is also intended to decrease irregularities in your skin surface.

Thigh Lift FAQs

Thigh lifts are usually performed on men or women with significant amounts of loose, hanging skin on the thighs. The goal is to return the body to a more youthful appearance after loss of skin elasticity due to extreme weight loss or age-related changes. After working hard to lose significant weight, developing a secondary problem such as sagging skin can be extremely frustrating. Your skin does not always fully conform to your body’s new shape, and one of the areas most affected by this problem is your thighs.

If the skin in your thigh area is saggy, dimpled, flabby, or has an orange peel texture, a thigh lift may be indicated. It is also beneficial if, when you lift your lax skin, the appearance of your thigh improves. If you have experienced a loss of skin elasticity in your thigh, hip, or buttock areas, it is intended to produce more attractive thigh and buttock skin with improved contours. It is also intended to decrease irregularities in your skin’s surface.

An ideal thigh lift candidate will meet a few criteria that include:
  • Being in overall good health
  • Being non-smoking before and after the procedures
  • Having health expectations about the benefits and limits of the procedure
  • Being prepared to follow post-surgery instructions and aftercare
  • Wanting to see an empowering improvement in your body’s appearance

Dr. Brent takes every precaution to ensure a pain-free surgical procedure with each option he offers. This of course also applies to thigh lifts. We use general anesthesia for this procedure, which keeps you unconscious from beginning to end. The entire time will pass in the blink of an eye, with no pain at all.

After your procedure, some pain is normal. Your body has gone through a significant change and will need time to heal. However, patients can manage any pain using medication as recommended. In some cases, even over-the-counter medication may be enough. The thighs are highly sensitive, though. So we often prescribe patients stronger pain medication to ease the experience. You will notice more pain in the initial few days, especially in any liposuctioned areas of the inner thigh. Fortunately, this period is over quickly, and pain should dramatically improve in the following days.

Although small amounts of fat may be removed along with excess skin during a thigh lift, it is not meant to remove significant fat deposits, so you should be at or near your ideal weight before considering the procedure. Candidates for surgery have extra skin that must be removed by excision. This differs from liposuction because liposuction removes only fat through small quarter-inch incisions but no skin. Liposuction alone will usually produce good results when you have good skin tone and minor fat excess.

If you have significant skin laxity from weight loss or general aging, however, liposuction will not give adequate improvement, and a thigh lift is necessary. Liposuction is sometimes performed in conjunction with it to smooth and contour areas separate from the effects of the excisions. During your initial consultation, Dr. Brent will evaluate your personal situation, and together, you will determine the best surgical plan.

The main phase of a thigh lift recovery lasts about 1 month, but this can vary significantly from one patient to the next. At first, patients will need to rest for a few weeks and avoid any activities before gradually returning to light movement. A typical experience involves taking about 2 full weeks of downtime after a thigh lift. This means staying home from work, focusing on resting, and caring for the surgical sites.

Patients will need to arrange for someone to help them at home for the first few days while your mobility is limited. Some patients may first spend a night or two at the surgical center before returning home. However, others may go home the same day.

Remember that proper recovery takes time and cannot be rushed. Dr. Brent provides full instructions for how to spend your time while healing. The most important factors involve keeping the surgical sites clean and safe. While a downtime of 2 weeks is generally required, some patients may need more time. Listen to your body and avoid straining it until you are back to 100%.
Though the changes are immediate, you will need some healing time before you can appreciate your results. Your thighs will be swollen and tender for a couple of weeks. But after this, you can begin to see their new contours. Following this initial period, your final results will appear once all swelling resolves. Residual swelling can take several months to fully disappear, which influences how the tissues settle. Still, you can enjoy your results well before this period.
Results can last for years but are best complemented by a healthy lifestyle for maximum duration. Generally, thigh lift results can last between 5 years and a lifetime, depending on individual factors. Maintaining a stable weight will help you keep your results in top shape for the longest timeframe. The aging process will also continue, but you can mitigate it with nonsurgical touchup treatments that help keep your skin smooth.

A thigh lift does involve making incisions, which heal as scar tissue. However, your results will be what people see, not the scars. Dr. Brent further helps mitigate scarring in three key ways:

  • He strategically places each scar in areas where visibility is at a minimum.
  • He keeps incision size to a minimum, always using the smallest possible incision for your intended results.
  • He follows the natural curve of the thigh when making incisions. This further helps them blend in with your body.
Over time, patients should see their scars improve. They may seem red and angry at first while healing. But give them time and you will see improvements. Furthermore, nonsurgical treatments (e.g., laser resurfacing) can help some patients further reduce scar visibility.

With any surgical procedure, patients should evaluate the risk. With a thigh lift, the procedure is generally safe, but only when performed by a skilled surgeon. We recommend patients fully evaluate their chosen surgeon to ensure their expertise and commitment to patient well-being.

Dr. Brent is a double board-certified plastic surgeon with years of experience and patient successes. Every procedure starts with patient safety. He also always sees patients for follow-up visits to stay involved in their recovery. Most of the risk from a thigh lift comes when healing goes wrong. So he and his team provide full support throughout that process, doing their part to keep you safe until you can see your full results.
You absolutely can combine a thigh lift with other options. When you do so, you can have multiple surgeries in a single visit. This saves you the inconvenience of multiple downtimes while also creating a fully sculpted aesthetic. Usually, top combinations include other body procedures, such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, or breast procedures (augmentation, lift). A thigh lift is also a core part of many mommy makeover procedures. This personalized set of procedures helps mothers reclaim their pre-baby bodies. The best part: you do not even need to be a mother to have a mommy makeover. Everyone deserves a body that makes them feel at their best.
A thigh lift can provide benefits at almost any age. If you have stubborn fat and want to slim your thighs, then you likely will qualify if you meet health requirements. However, patients should be at least 18 years old. Younger patients are still developing, and a thigh lift could interfere with their growth. Otherwise, patients can have a thigh lift at any point as an adult, from their 20s and up. Patients should keep in mind that age can influence how long the recovery lasts, with younger patients healing more quickly.

The cost of your thigh lift will be evaluated during the consultation. This is because multiple factors influence the final price. Each procedure is built with personalized techniques and elements designed to create the best results possible in line with your goals. You will receive a personalized quote after building your procedure plan, which comes with no commitment needed. The quote will provide clear, transparent breakdowns of each factor in your procedure’s cost.

Since a thigh lift is a cosmetic procedure, insurance plans usually do not cover the cost. Still, we want to ensure our patients have access to the care they need. We can provide recommendations for financing options that allow for more flexible payment for your procedure. Ask about financing during the consultation, and Dr. Brent will gladly provide comprehensive information.
